Vemma - No Banned Substances

without comments

Vemma® does not contain any World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned substances.

Certainly not surprising, but none-the-less very reassuring for many professional and college athletes who have made Vemma their supplement of choice.

ConsumerLab.com now has Vemma listed on its Web site, www.ConsumerLab.com, as having passed its Athletic Banned Substances Screening.

Can Diabetics Consume Vemma?

without comments

I recommend that diabetics consult their health care professional before beginning any supplementation program. Your health care provider will find the following Vemma article helpful.

Why does Vemma use fructose as a sweetener in some of its products?
by Dr. Yibing Wang

We use fructose because it is an all-natural compound/sweetener that is known to have the lowest Glycemic Index* of any of the simple sugars. Because of this, fructose results in lower blood glucose levels after ingestion, making it the preferred sweetener for individuals with diabetes and other insulin-related problems.** Additionally, fructose works the best in terms of mixing capabilities and taste masking properties. It masks the natural bitterness of minerals and mangosteen pericarp without creating a chemical sweetness-like taste.

It is important to note that the fructose amount in Vemma is 8 grams per serving. As a comparison, there are 12 grams of fructose in one large apple. So, relative to the amount of natural sugar we take in on a daily basis, 8 grams is very small.

For those wondering if the fructose we use in Vemma is the same as high fructose corn syrup, absolutely not! Below are the chemical definitions of the two and as you can see high fructose corn syrup is very different. We will never use high fructose corn syrup in any of our products.

Fructose, or levulose, is a levorotatory monosaccharide and an isomer of glucose (C6H12O6). The chemical composition of fructose is (C6H12O6). Pure fructose has a sweet taste similar to cane sugar, but with a “fruity” aroma. Although fructose is a hexose (6 carbon sugar), it generally exists as a 5-member hemiketal ring (a furanose). This structure is responsible for the long metabolic pathway and high reactivity compared to glucose.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) refers to a group of corn syrups which have undergone enzymatic processing in order to increase their fructose content and are then mixed with pure corn syrup (100% glucose) to reach their final form. The typical types of HFCS are: HFCS 90 (most commonly used in baked goods) which is approximately 90% fructose and 10% glucose; HFCS 55 (most commonly used in soft drinks) which is approximately 55% fructose and 45% glucose; and HFCS 42 (most commonly used in sports drinks) which is approximately 42% fructose and 58% glucose.

*Glycemic Index: The Glycemic Index is a dietary index that’s used to rank carbohydrate-based foods. The Glycemic Index predicts the rate at which the ingested food will increase blood sugar levels.

Comparison of Vemma® and XanGo®

without comments

Vemma XanGo comparison

A recent press release suggests that XanGo® enjoys gloating about their dominance in the mangosteen juice category. XanGo has every right to be proud of their accomplishments, but exactly what does ‘dominance’ mean?

XanGo currently posses a bigger share of the mangosteen market than Vemma® does. That said, Ford once had a much larger market share than Toyota did.

Does XanGo market the best mangosteen product? Ultra-premium, supplement consumers are intelligent folks who recognize most marketing claims, including press releases, are little more than cleverly worded ’spin.’ The aphorism “Documentation beats conversation.” certainly holds true in this case. Here are the results of the latest independent lab tests comparing Vemma (Mangosteen Plus™) to XanGo:

Vemma contains
- 2,055% more Alpha-Mangostin than XanGo*
- 1,268% more Beta-Mangostin than XanGo***
- 540% more Gamma-Mangostin than XanGo*
- 212% more Mangostinone than XanGo*
- 2,812% more Smeathxanthone A than XanGo*
- 1,013% more Proanthocyanidins than XanGo**
- 2,422% more EGCG than XanGo*
- 354% more Rutins than XanGo**
- 731% more Catechins than XanGo*
- 95,474% more Vitamin A (as beta carotene) than XanGo****
- 7,784% more Vitamin C than XanGo****
- 4,474% more Vitamin D3 than XanGo****
- 62,940% more Vitamin E (as d-alpha tocopherol) than XanGo****
- 266% more Vitamin B1 than XanGo****
- 328% more Vitamin B2 than XanGo****

Mangosteen ‘Spin’

without comments

Jason Gospodarek OD, presumably a XANGO™ distributor, has written:

“Vemma uses an extract of the pericarp, which is standardized to 10% xanthones. This is either mainly or entirely Mangostin and since it is an extract, we know that it may be rendered ineffective in the body. An extract is a substance that is chemically separated from the parent fruit and concentrated into one of many forms, most commonly a white powder. That powder shows a high concentration of the single xanthone Mangostin in laboratory tests, but it does not work as well in the body as Mangostin in the whole fruit puree of the Mangosteen.”

Dr. Gospodarek deviously implies that Vemma contains “a white powder” without ever actually stating that it does. Why would he do that? Well, ‘white powder’ doesn’t sound very natural does it? Dr. Gospodarek is attempting to overcome an obvious XANGO shortcoming:

It takes over fourteen (14) bottles of XANGO™ to equal the natural mangostin xanthone content of one (1) bottle of Vemma™ (Mangosteen Plus); independent lab tests have shown that a bottle of Vemma contains 3,011.52 milligrams of natural mangostin xanthones, in contrast, a bottle of XanGo™ contains only 192.5 milligrams *

Notice that this ‘over 14 to equal 1′ statement was made based upon ‘independent lab tests*.’

Here’s the bottom line:
- XANGO uses reconstituted whole mangosteen fruit
- Vemma uses reconstituted whole mangosteen fruit
- XANGO adds apple, grape and other filler juices
- Vemma adds mangosteen pericarp extract - stabilized, organic, glyconutrient-rich aloe vera - organic decaffeinated green tea - over 65 all-natural, plant-derived, ionic minerals and 12 full-spectrum vitamins.

Vemma beats XANGO in every comparative test, I’m aware of, from the latest phytonutrient tests (see proanthocyanidins below), to xanthones, to ORAC value, to vitamin content.

Proanthocyanidins

without comments

What are proanthocyanidins and their benefits?
Dr. Yibing Wang

Proanthocyanidins are a specific class of phytonutrients with numerous health-giving properties. This class of flavonoids earned their primary reputation as being powerful antioxidants or free radical scavengers. Free radicals are damaging unstable oxygen molecules that get into the body as a result of over-exercise, stress, being exposed to dirty air and other environmental pollutants. Proanthocyanidins also help in the stabilization of collagen and elastin. These are two critical fibrous proteins found in the connective tissues that support organs, joints, blood vessels and muscles. Proanthocyanidins can be found in numerous plant and food sources.

We recently tested* Vemma’s Mangosteen Plus for the presence of these beneficial nutrients and found that we have 1,013% more than a leading competitor – 160 mgs per serving! This reinforces the fact that Mangosteen Plus is the most powerful whole fruit mangosteen juice product anywhere!

ORAC – Huh… What’s That?

without comments

Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity or ORAC for Short!
Dr. Yibing Wang

The term Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) is quite a mouthful! And, it is important for consumers and health care providers to understand what it means, particularly in relation to dietary supplements and their health benefits.

ORAC is a test tube method of measuring the antioxidant potency in foods and supplements. But, before going any further, it is important to know what antioxidants are and why they are essential for health.

Just like rust on a car, oxidation can damage our bodies’ cells and may contribute to the aging process. Oxidation happens as the result of invading, damaging molecules called free radicals. Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules that get into the body as a result of over-exercise, stress, being exposed to dirty air, and other environmental pollutants.

Antioxidants help prevent oxidation by counteracting free radicals.* They do this by binding to them and transforming them into non-damaging compounds. Consequently, antioxidants are integral in supporting the body’s natural defense system.* For this reason it is important to have a product that is high in antioxidant protection.

ORAC test results let us know which foods and supplements are high or low in antioxidant protection. When a food or supplement is being measured for antioxidant potency by the ORAC method, a value reflecting the strength and duration of the product’s antioxidant protection ability is given as a single number. The higher the number, the stronger the protection.

Ronald Prior, the scientist who helped devise the ORAC test, recommends that people consume at least 3,500 ORAC units a day to have a significant impact on the body.

For individuals who don’t get lots of fruit and vegetables in their diet, a supplement with a high ORAC value can contribute to a strong daily nutritional regime.

So, for robust protection, Vemma may be just what the doctor ordered. With a whopping 115,000+ ORAC units, that’s over 3400 per dose, you may just have the most powerful liquid antioxidant product anywhere!

Mangosteen – Get More!

without comments

My headline could just as easily have read “Xanthones – Get More!”

Recent independent lab tests concluded that Vemma® delivers 64.66 mg of Beta Mangostin and 29.45 mg of other xanthones per serving. That’s over 94 mg of xanthones, derived from the whole mangosteen fruit, per fluid ounce serving. Were you aware that Xango™ contains significantly less than 10 mg per ounce?

Conclusion: Compared to Xango™, Vemma® contains 1,053% more xanthones per ounce.

A serving of Vemma® also provides your body with over 65 plant-derived ionic minerals, aloe vera, decaffeinated green tea and 12 full-spectrum vitamins.
